Queen of Tarts Review of
by J.A. Huss
I was seriously a bit tentative about reading this story… I am addicted to J.A. Huss’ sci-fi Junco series, but Tragic is new adult. I haven’t read that many NA books …so I procrastinated. I finally picked it up and I’m all Gahhh! and Bad Llama scolding myself. I love Tragic! It has what I’ve come to need in a J.A. Huss story, smart writing, powerful storytelling, damaged and relatable characters, heart, angst and snark.I stayed up way late two nights in a row reading Rook and Ronin’s story. I’m so glad the sequel, Manic will be out August 1st cause I need it and can’t wait long too read it.
Tragic is the story of Rook… and Ronin. 😛 Two people with pasts that have scarred them and given them both baggage. Not quite matching sets, but definitely banged and bruised bags of history.
I grieved for Rook and was proud of her for escaping her tragic past. She grew up in the foster care system and then became involved with a man who wanted to take care of her. And then he just wanted to control her with his fists. She is very guarded, strong, and determined to survive and never be powerless again. A modeling job is thrown at her and she decides to try it so she can make some money and have the ability to make her own choices.
Ronin…. *swoon* I fell hard for him. He’s delicious and not without tragedy either. There were chapters from his point of view and I really liked seeing into his head and where he was coming from. He was drawn to Rook immediately. He saw her strength and the fire burning inside her. And their chemistry? *fans self* oh my goodness!
Oh! The portrayal of the modeling scenes was fascinating and I totally want that closet. I also adored the fact that Rook and Ronin are fans of RetroTube and their running joke about Gidget and Larue always made me happy.
A few of my fav lines…
♥ Beauty is fleeting. I know someone important said that, but I have no idea who it was. I just know it’s true. So I’m gonna grab this second chance with everything I’ve got and I’m gonna ride this wave until it spits me back out on the beach of bullshit.
Because I know better know.
♥ He’s one cute guy and all. But he’s not for me. Even if he is tall and has those amazing blue eyes. I bet if we had babies our kids would totally have the most cornflower blue eyes ever. And dark raven hari. Oh God, we’d make little model babies. They’d need agents at birth.
I am crazy!
♥ “Ronin Flynn, you might undo me.”
“I’m already undone, Gidge. I’m just hoping you’ll stick around long enough to put me back together.”
I raced through this book and crave more. It was a very fast paced read. Tragic is a powerful story of choice, desire, love, life and hope. I know they have a lot to overcome but I am eager to see more of their journey. If you enjoy new adult books or angsty contemporary romance read Tragic…. Now.
