Interview with Xe Sands + audio book contest!

Me: Xe! Darlin’ come on in! I’m so excited that you are visiting The Book Tart. Get comfy please on my virtual couch. Oh! Can I get you something to drink? Water, soda, coffee, something bubbly? We need to take care of your voice! I like it a lot 😀

Xe: Hey Kat! Thanks so much for having me – I think we’re about to have a bit of fun…as for something to drink…hmm. Well, after the crazy hours I’ve been keeping and the whirlwind of APAC and the Audies, makes me wish that I liked wine! But I’ll just take some Throat Coat Tea with lemon and honey, please.

Me: *hands Xe her drink and flops onto the couch* How are you hon? I know you are busy busy busy! Do you squeeze in some silly hobbies or weekend getaways?

Xe: Yeah, it has been a bit beyond the pale, especially this past month, as I finish up a number of projects, a nifty promotional piece for Amanda Leduc & Little Fiction, and prep for the launch of Going Public…in Shorts.

But hobbies or getaways. Heh. Not so much. Ooo, I did squeeze in fancy dress and shoe shopping though – had to get decked out for the Audies. Does that count?

Now you’ve got me thinking…I must have had hobbies at some point. I do get obsessive about crafty things from time to time, including the 12-hr project that was my teen’s birthday cake – full-on Supernatural theme with an Impala made out of cake 🙂

Me:Oh My Goodness! A Supernatural theme Impala cake?! Gaahhh I want one too! 😀Hearts of Shadow

I love listening to audio books on car trips and I just started listening to you. *hides face in pillow* I’m sorry! I hadn’t bought any new audio books in a while. Ummm Sooo yeah… I listened to your narration for Kira Brady’s Hearts of Shadow and fell in love with Leif and Grace all over again. Now I need to get the first book too. 😀 Do you listen to audio books when you travel?

Xe: Aw, thanks Kat! Now get your head out of the pillow – no need for apologies. I’m just glad you enjoyed Leif and Grace in audio. I adored them and had a great time voicing their story. That one actually made me cry at one point (I’ve got an outtake of that somewhere…).

And I do listen to audiobooks when I travel solo. After years of listening to audiobooks together in the car, my daughter has done a 180 on them and won’t touch them with a 10′ earbud. My husband is slowly coming around but we’ve got different reading tastes so I save the audiobooks for when I’m either traveling solo or engaged in chores. My library has a nice selection of Playaways, which are my favorite way to listen these days.

Forever: The World of NightwalkersMe: Can you tell us a bit about narrating Jacqueline Frank’s Nightwalker world books?  Forever is available Now! *couch snoopy dance*

Xe: Oh gracious. I feel like Jacquelyn and I are an old married audio couple now – LOL! The Nightwalker series features some truly wonderful characters to voice, and a bunch of humor thrown in with all that action and those “sexy times,” which makes it a really nice combo for me as a narrator. And I’m excited to see how this newest spin-off – the World of the Nightwalkers which Forever is the second of – finally connects up with the characters we’ve grown to love from the original 6-book series.

Me:I love that you’ve been the voice of all the Nightwalker books!

Can you share what project you’re working on now and/or what’s coming out next?

Xe: Well, you already know about HEARTS OF SHADOW 🙂 And oh baby, how I WISH I could reveal the book I’m prepping now. Suffice it to say it’s a joy to work with this particular author again, and she’s already got me blushing good and proper! Not to mentioIs This Tomorrown the The Cursedbook I just finished, THE CURSED, by Alyssa Day (first in the League of the Black Swan series). I love voicing Day’s work as she brings in so much humor and in this particular book, I’ve also got a darkly noble bad-boy to voice, which is, um, my FAVORITE. It’s been a bit of a romance-palooza, after a spring dedicated to fiction/literary fiction with some wonderful books, including IS THIS TOMORROW by Caroline Leavitt and KEEPSAKE by Kristina Riggle.

Me: Oh! Oh! Do you have any funny vocal exercises you do or little limericks you say before you start recording? Like…. blowing raspberries? <g>

Xe: Haha! Yes. Sometimes, I do a bunch of silly dancing and singing in my living room to the music my teen listens to (with no one around of course!). And sometimes, if I’m feeling a bit tongue-tied, I’ll go a few rounds of “To sit in solemn silence on a dull ,dark, dock…” until my lips and tongue start behaving themselves. Gotta whip them into shape some days, I tell ya.

Me: 😀 Love that!

It’s silly time! *rubs hands together* mwahahaha *coughs* 😉

How could you compare narrating to cake decorating and what’s this about Goran Visjnic? 🙂

Xe: Oh you…you’ve been peeking into past commentary! My goodness..what other things have I said that shall now come back to bite me in silly places *shifts eyes nervously around the room*

Me: *tries to look innocent* There may be questions about ferrets too someday. 😛

Xe: Funny you should mention cake decorating…as I said above, I do this crazy cake gig every year for my daughter’s birthday. And what I’ve realized, whether it’s cake or visual art or narration or modifying my dress for the Audies – it doesn’t matter. It’s all ART. And I end up approaching it the same way, psychologically…I keep working the piece until I’m satisfied thgoranat it’s really honest and truly the very best I can possibly deliver .

And Goran…ohhhhhhhh Goran. Mmmm….er, what? Were we talking? I…I, uh, drifted off there for a minute. Oh yes – GORAN. So here’s what’s up with Goran. I think it was when I was prepping to record JACOB (Book 1 of Nightwalkers), I needed to study an actor who spoke with the kind of accent I wanted to emulate. I threw the question out to Twitter and a friend suggested Goran and I got to watch/listen lots of lovely interviews with him and his luscious voice…in the name of work 🙂

Me:Uh huh… Work *nods*

I just made up a word pifflogy please make up a definition and use the word in a sentence. 😛

Xe: The practice of summarily dismissing another’s protests or concerns in a generous and kind-hearted way. Related words: pifffft! – an expression used to indicate the dismissive noise that often accompanies the action of “waving away someone’s concerns” in a spirit of generosity.

“Kindly Mrs. Smythe waved away our apologies for childhood transgressions so often that we had begun to anticipate her pifflogy before the sound even escaped her lips.”

Me:Nice! related word pifffft. 😉 I say that sometimes too.

We’re gonna play a game of Madlibs… nope, not telling what it is. You can make your answers as naughty or nice as you’d like 😀

This’ll be good. 😀 Here’s your results…. *drumroll please*

New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Frank returns with the sizzling second book in her sensual new series set in the World of the Nightwalkers—where alluring entities known as Bodywalkers face the ultimate threat.

After being brought back from death, police officer Jackson Waverly receives the shock of his life: he has become host to a Bodywalker, a spirit that is reborn in flesh and blood, and part of a proud, ancient race that uses its extraordinary gifts to battle dark, evil forces. Jackson’s spirit is a powerful one—none other than the Egyptian pharaoh Menes, who longs to reunite with his eternal love, the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut.

While Menes is obsessed with finding the perfect vessel for his queen, Jackson cannot stop thinking about Dr. Marissa Anderson, the gorgeous precinct shrink who keeps pushing him to confront his grief over the loss of his K-9 partner. But what Marissa really arouses most in Jackson is intense desire, which is exactly what Menes is looking for. To fight a great enemy, pharaoh and queen must join; but to host Hatshepsut, Marissa will first have to die. Fate has given Jackson a profound choice: save Marissa from Menes’s plan or keep an entire species from the brink of extinction.
