I am so happy to help Lorena celebrate her book birthday today with the release of The X!
It’s out today! oops!@ It’s out the end of the week! *Snoopy Dance* I don’t often read books from the thriller genre but I was lucky enough to read a review copy and I raced through this book. It’s a fast paced adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat rooting for the heroine Clarissa to kick butt and take back her life! Click HERE for my review.
Lorena is hanging out with me today on my interview couch eating M&Ms and chatting about Bond and Orphan Annie hair and more. Oh! She’s giving on lucky commenter a copy of The X! Use the rafflecopter at the end of this chat to enter.
The Queen of Tarts
Me: Hi Lorena :) It’s so wonderful to finally meet you! Come on in and take a seat on my cozy virtual couch. I am thrilled to chat with you about your new book, The X. *bounces on couch* Can I get you something to drink? Coffee, tea, soda or something stronger? Oh! I have snacks too! I always have snacks. *nods at plate of cookies and grabs a handful of m&ms* please have some.
Lorena: Thank you, what a gracious hostess you are. And thank you for having peanut M&M’s they are my favorite!
Me: I love almost all M&Ms… Except the peanut butter and jelly ones! lol those were a miss for me.
*get’s Lorena’s drink and sets it on the coffee table before flopping on the couch*
Lorena: I have so enjoyed our emails back and for since we met. Your wit, energy, and spark are apparent right away. I myself have spazzie moments so it is easy to be patient.
Yes, my novel The X has been a fun book to write. My first two books, Beatrice Munson and House on Plunkett Street were great fun to write but fell more in the ‘chick lit’ format and The X is a thriller. That has been fun to let my protagonist, Clarissa, channel her inner bad ass.
I will say that my ex probably was the original inspiration for the book when I thought of it. But it ended up being a real spin on the idea, ‘do you really know who you’re sleeping with.’
Me: The X is a very exciting story! I loved Clarissa and was on the edge of my seat for her entire adventure! Did you get a kick out of some of your research into the cloak and dagger elements of the book?
Lorena: Yes, I will tell you a story about this book. I started writing it and I as jamming with Clarissa’s character. But the male character, Bryce Brightman I just couldn’t get a handle writing. Then one day I went to coffee with my daughter and I had my FBI sweatshirt on and a man said to me, “I was in for twenty-five years.” We started talking and I told him about my book and that I was having a hard time with the ex-FBI guy. He was wonderful and told me he’d meet with me and help me out. We met for coffee one day and I asked him a bunch of questions, but his persona was really what gave me the voice of Bryce.
I called that a ‘God wink’ because I was ready to let the book go but in the moment I was inspired and finished it the book in a few months.
Me: awww I like that. A ‘God wink” I’m glad you finished it!
Tell me a bit about yourself. *snuggles down on couch and slurps my Dr. Pepper* What’s your favorite color? Have you ever had bangs or dyed your hair a crazy color? Do you know karate? *gasps for breath* ummmm what can I say… I’m a curious cat! Lol
Lorena: My favorite color is red, followed closely by that really cool teal blue that they use for vases a lot or accent colors in the architecture magazines.
I have had longer bangs. Perfect feathers in the 80′s. And my mom was a hair stylist so she usually did my hair until high school when she’d been out of the business for a while. She said that she didn’t know if she should keep doing my hair. I begged and pleaded and she gave me a perm. I ended up looking like Little Orphan Annie. Seriously, I had to wear a ski cap to bed so that my hair would lay down enough that I could something with it. She never did my hair again after that
I did study karate. In fact, after my divorce I felt that I wanted to empower myself and so I started taking lessons and got all the way to blue belt. It was fun and the hardest workout I EVER have done.
I also am a photographer. I have done the advertising shots for our other company, www.Mandrums.com . It’s been such fun. It’s a great way for me to relax and just focus through the lens.
Oh! Oh! What are you working on now? *munches cookie* orwa *swallows* OR! what book do you have out next?
Lorena: I am actually working on two things at the moment.
The first is my next book, Coaster. The story is a character study on grief and loss. The story begins when 8 people are killed when a roller coaster explodes and the plot continues with multiple changes in point of view with the people who survive those who have died.
I am also working on a novel about Marilyn Monroe. It’s been great fun to read so many books, see movies, and really study Marilyn. She was a fascinating woman and I have always felt that she is misrepresented in the media. Yes, she had her issues but she was a smart woman who read great Russian authors and put the studios over a barrel. This novel is my chance to show her the way I believe she really was.
Me: Marilyn? Tell me when that’s done please!
I just made up a word trophwitty please create a definition and use the word in a sentence.
Lorena: A noun. What you win when you get the highest word score in Words with Friends.
I used letters X, K, V, and Q to get a score that clinched my winning the trophwitty.
Me: *snort* Nice trophwitty!
What is the 10nd line on the 57th page of your first novel?
“Do what? I felt my heart lurch at her words.
Me: How could you compare your writing process to covert operations?
Lorena: As with covert operations my writing is done solitary. I work alone, like James Bond. I am completely focused on my task at hand. There is no use for rubber rafts or covering myself in mud, but I do often have to go undercover in my stories, blending in and becoming part of the scenery so that I can search out the story and characters.
Me: *claps hands* Love that! I have James Bond running through my imagination right now… He keeps flickering between Daniel Craig and Sean Connery
What’s your favorite planet and why?
Lorena: Saturn. I love jewelry and it has all those beautiful rings.
