Banner-Extra2Me: Genevieve! Hey darlin’! Welcome to The Book Tart. Come on in and get comfy on my virtual couch. I was so happy when Red Tash sent you my way. Oh! Before we get started, can I get you a drink? Coffee, tea, soda, Mudder’s Milk? 😉

Genevieve: Oh, do you have any black cherry soda?

Me: Of course! I am all about the cherries! *passes Genevieve her drink and flops on the couch* I have Girl Scout cookies too 😀 feel free. *muches a Tagalong* So hon… details! Can you tell me a bit about your love of all things good and geeky?

Watch Full Episodes

Genevieve: Yes! I grew up with three older brothers, and we were all naturally geeks. However, unlike them I developed a love for superheroes from a young age. In fact, when I was a wee little Genevieve (about three or four), Superman was my imaginary friend and I believed I was going to grow up to become Supergirl! Yikes. Well, around the time I realized I wasn’t going to grow into my super powers, and in fact had no super powers, I started looking around for another heroic mentor and discovered Batman. I’ve been a fan of the Dark Knight ever since. Specifically, Batman: The Animated Series and everything that falls into the DC Animated Universe.

But beyond superheroes, I’m what I’d call an escapist geek. I love anything that allows me to visit a different world, like fantasy and sci-fi, though I always liked the stuff that was a bit on the more humorous side. I grew up in the library, and basically read out the entire YA fiction section—at that stage, I was in love with Bruce Coville, Diane Duane, and Patricia Wrede—by the time I was 12 I was running out of YA books and had to move into the adult section. That’s when I discovered Lois McMaster Bujold, Robin Hobb, Dave Duncan, etc.

That taste has carried with me into adulthood. Basically, if it mixes heavy themes with a dose of levity and whimsy, I’m in.

Me: I’m a nerd too 😀 Nerds rule! Lol See? *points to dvd collection* I adore Joss Whedon, BSBG, Fringe, Superhero movies, Supernatural…. Speaking of tv. You’re on tv! What can you tell us about TBS’ King Of The Nerds? How did that happen? Lol

Revelations: Song of the Silvertongue 1 (Volume 1) by Genevieve Pearson

Genevieve: That’s a fun story! I had just finished writing my book Revelations – Song of the Silvertongue and I was feeling at odds and ends. I was waiting for a new job to start writing study guides, but was stuck at home. My husband saw an ad for a TV show looking for nerds and sent me the link, suggesting I go for it. I hemmed and hawed about it, but he kept nagging me. Finally, to get him off of my back, I just filled out a quick email and attached a photo and sent it off.

I had a reply by the end of that day asking me to come in to audition in person! Luckily, I actually lived pretty close to the area where the show was being filmed, so I went out, got a haircut, and went to tape my interview. As I really felt I had about zero chance of getting on the show, I just had fun with it. Then it became a process of what I’d call punctuated equilibrium. A month or so would go by without hearing anything, then I’d suddenly get an email saying I was still in the running and asking for more information. I’d send off that info and then hear nothing for another month, and so on. It actually took almost a year for the full process!

The funny thing is, I never thought it was real or that I actually had a chance until the final round where they told me to pack up all of my stuff and bring it to the hotel for a two-day long audition. At that point, I was told I was in the final 15/16, and if I got it I’d be going straight from the hotel to the house. If I didn’t get it, I’d be going home. And I still didn’t believe I would actually be cast until one of the executive producers showed up to give me the good news Sunday night.

Me: *squee!* That’s epic! I love that you are on a celebration of nerds! King Of The Nerds is awesomesauce 😀

Oh! Your Talk NerdyTo Me song rocks! *singing* I don’t care if it’s Klingon or Na’vi

You write young adult novels too! Your series Song Of The Silvertongue looks right up my alley. Nephilim and the Four Horsemen of  the Apocalypse! Tell me more *bounces on couch*

Genevieve: In the first book, Revelations, Kyrie is about nineteen, and like a lot of women her age, is stuck working a menial job while she tries to save up for college. In this case, she’s a greeter at Smiley’s Mart (like Wal-Mart). One day, four hipsters who give her a really bad vibe come into the store looking for her best friend…and Kyrie realizes there’s a lot more going on in her tiny little home town than she thought.

Kyrie has other issues to deal with, too!

  • Her ex-boyfriend is back in town, wanting to rekindle their relationship, but he seems to have some sort of connection to the Horsemen.
  • Aaron, the oldest son of a very religious family (think: The Duggars) keeps appearing at what is suspiciously just the right time.
  • Her absentee father turned out to be an Angel (?! Yeah, her mom neglected that fact) and as a result Kyrie’s not human, but actually a Nephilim—a half-Angel bred to be a warrior who fights in her father’s name.
  • There are TOADS falling from the SKY.

Revelations is the first book in the Song of the Silvertongue series. In each book, Kyrie, as a Nephilim, must travel to a different town in order to avoid whatever new apocalypse is coming.

All of the books are very fun, with lots of action and adventure and a bit of drama to boot.  Genesis also introduces Kyrie’s half-brother (and fellow Nephilim) Cal, who I happen to enjoy writing about quite a lot.

Me: *chokes on cookie* toads?! I am looking forward to reading these! 😀

It’s silly time! I’d like to blame it all on the cookies… but I’m generally pretty silly. lol girl scout cookies

How could you compare your writing process to a Meteor shower?

Genevieve: My ideas come as a bright flash of inspiration in the sky. Often there’s a rush of inspiration as the meteors fall, but then I wind up scouring the ground for the left over bits and pieces to pull the rest of the story together.

Aw, wait, that sounds so depressing!  Well, at the end, I at least have a  lovely pile of rocks to admire.

Me: shiny!

I just made up a word megasenorgen please make up a definition and use the word in a sentence. 😛

Genevieve: Megasenorgen, noun. A Swedish gremlin that lives beneath pastry shops and feasts on the bits of batter and crumbs that fall to the ground. If they grow large enough, they will nibble the toes of bakers at night.

In a sentence:

Every night Ingrid made sure to carefully clean the floor of the pastry shop, lest they invite an infestation of megasenorgen. She wouldn’t want to ruin her pedicure.

Me: nibble the toes off bakers? rotflol Nice!

Who said the following:

Terse? I can be terse. Once, in flight school, I was laconic.

  1. Kara Thrace
  2. Wash
  3. Bruce Wayne
  4. Han Solo

B. Wash! I loved “War Stories!”

Accomplice? I’m going to tell them the whole thing was your idea.

  1. Kara Thrace
  2. Wash
  3. Bruce Wayne
  4. Han Solo

C. Bruce Hunky Wayne.

Don’t everyone thank me at once.

  1. Kara Thrace
  2. Wash
  3. Bruce Wayne
  4. Han Solo

D. Han Solo!

You know, everyone I know is fighting to get back what they had. I’m fighting because I don’t know how to do anything else.

  1. Kara Thrace
  2. Wash
  3. Bruce Wayne
  4. Han Solo

A. Kara Thrace! That little spitfire, I named my cat, Starbuck, after her because she was a little fighter.

Me: *claps* yay! You got them all right. Your cat is Starbuck? awwww 🙂

It’s Madlibs time! Give me random word parts as requested please. 😉 You can make your answers as naughty or nice as you’d like 😀

 A Few Deal Breakers

  • He loves his pet SPEEDO more than his mother.
  • He obsessively catalogs and updates his collection of SLOTHS.
  • He slathers his hair with MOTOR OIL.
  • He says “FOGHORN” when the two of you snuggle.
  • He spends way too much money on extravagant GOGGLES.
  • He sleeps in a bed that resembles a 20-year-old BUBBLE.
  • His CELLPHONE is smaller than yours.
  • He travels to a foreign WRENCH regularly and has never invited you along.
  • He looks like JENNIFER LAWRENCE when his hair gets too long.
  • He is mean to HIGH HEELS as well as GYMNASTS!

Me: *chortles* Foghorn! lol If he’s buying extravagant goggles he’s likely into steampunk. <g> And I’m glad he only travels to a WRENCH and not a Wench! And Don’t touch my heels or make a gymnast cry! Those are definitely deal breakers. 😛

It’s time for The Book Tart Quickie

  1. What talents do you have?: I’m pretty good at making up silly songs on the fly. I’m also tall, does that count as a talent?
  2. What’s your favorite zoo animal? The ocelot, of course! I don’t like camels because one attacked me once.
  3. Favorite lipgloss/lipstick?: Revlon Rum Raisin in the fall, Petal in the summer.
  4. Have you ever played a practical joke on anyone? I once convinced the American Girl Doll collecting community that AG had been bought out by MGA Entertainment (the company that makes Bratz). All it took was a Wikipedia edit and a fake article from BusinessWeek. OMG Best Prank Ever!
  5. How big is your TV? Biggish? 32”? Wait, that seems to big. 24”? I gotta go grab a ruler…
  6. If you were a super hero what powers would you have?:  I like the idea of teleportation. I’d also like to be able to find lost things…so many possibilities!
  7. And what would your costume be?:  Red with black and gold trim.
  8. Can you build a house of cards?: I can! I used to do that while bored at camp. I also re-learned during King of the Nerds.
  9. What would be your dream sandwich?: Ice cream. Two chocolate cookies with mint ice cream from Diddy Riese.
  10. Have you ever tie-dyed your own clothes?: I have, I tie-dyed socks and a t-shirt and it came out a muddy mess. Never again.

Thanks for playing with me here at The Book Tart! We’ll be rooting for you to be King of The Nerds!

When four seemingly über-cool college kids arrive in a small West Texas town, only one girl recognizes them for who they really are—the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Nineteen years old, a greeter at the local Smiley’s Supercenter, Kyrie’s been blessed with an uncommonly good intuition…and a few other abilities she’s been keeping secret. However, the Horsemen bring with them a magnitude of evil Kyrie’s never seen before. Adding to the complications, her best friend has gone missing and Nate, her gorgeous but chronically deceptive ex-flame falls back in to her life, wanting to rekindle their old relationship. That can’t be a coincidence, can it? Then there’s Aaron, the oldest child in a family considered overly-religious even by Texas standards, who’s determined to help her whether she wants it or not. With boys, it seems, it’s either feast or famine. And of course they only want you when the world’s about to end. As plagues descend on the tiny town, Kyrie finds herself facing down Death, Pestilence, Famine and War in a fight for the lives of everyone around her. But with myth becoming reality and discoveries are made that shake her to her core, she begins to waver in her conviction of right and wrong. Temptation waits in the dark of stormy Texas nights, and if Kyrie can’t find the will to fight any longer, the end of days are only just beginning.

nerdcardMore Genevieve

Having collected action figures and comic books from a young age, Genevieve always dreamed of being an action hero. When she grew up, she decided writing about them would be the next best thing.

To aid her on this quest, she attended the University of Southern California, where she got degrees in Business as well as Cinema Production. She still makes short films which the astute may be able to find when they look.

She now divides her time between Southern California and the Pacific Northwest, with a multitude of pets and a husband to keep her busy. She hopes one day to have a room big enough to show off all of her Batman toys.
