Vintage Vegas

Las Vegas is the setting for my new erotic romance novel Vegas Knights, and in honor of the Queen of Tart’s love for all things retro, I thought I’d treat her readers a tour of the best of classic Sin City.

No vacation to Vegas is complete without touring downtown’s Fremont Street. Situated north of ‘The Strip’, Fremont Street was the place to be after gambling was legalized in the ’30s. Nicknamed ‘Glitter Gulch’, it became a hotbed of mob activity in the ’50s and later. Now, Fremont Street is a pedestrian mall covered with a canopy that is the ‘screen’ for a free nightly light show. Free concerts are also held on two sound stages, so check out the link above for a full schedule. For some jivin’ swing music, be sure to catch Friday Swingin’ Pedestrians or Jump, Jive and Wail. Cool, daddy-o!

If you just can’t get enough of the glittery stuff, check out the Neon Museum north of Fremont. Formerly known as the Neon Sign Boneyard, where neon signs went to die, the museum now offers tours of its fabulous collection.

Fremont is also home to the city’s first hotel, the Golden Gate Casino & Hotel (the address is 1 Fremont Street!). Recently remodeled rooms still offer that Rat Pack vibe — and even artwork featuring the famous ‘Rats’ — while offering modern amenities. And don’t miss out on their $2.99 shrimp cocktail: “It’s the best tail in town!”

For the hippest of hotels, book a room at the El Cortez Cabana Suites. The prices are surprisingly affordable, if not downright cheap, but the vintage boutique ambience and stylish decor are supermurgitroid. Plus some vintage rooms remain untouched for those who want the full experience.

It may not look like much from the outside, but the Golden Steer Steakhouse was a favorite haunt of Marilyn, Elvis, Frank, Dean and Sammy. Its red and black upholstered booths and wood paneled walls harken back to a bygone era. Reserve the Elvis Presley Booth and arrive hungry (and carnivorous!).

Moving out of Fremont and down to The Strip, drop into ‘The Mob Attraction’ exhibit at The Tropicana for an interactive journey through organized crime, complete with real mob memorabilia. If you can’t get enough of the mob stuff, hit The Mob Museum for a less romantic picture of what went down back in the day.

Jubilee! at Bally’s offers up some of the best — and longest-running — Vegas showgirl entertainment. Long-legged ladies and topless dancers are decked out in rhinestone-studded costumes designed by the great Bob Mackie.

If you’re going to be anywhere near Sin City over the last weekend of March, hie on over to Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend at the Orleans Hotel. Seriously retro, the four-day event is the epitome of the vintage lifestyle, and includes a burlesque competition, tons of bands and a tiki pool party!

The Peppermill Fireside Lounge is another great vintage stop. Purple neon reflects off the mirrors and your bowl-sized cocktails.

No vacation is complete without a little shopping. First, stop at Retro Vegas on Fremont for some stylish decor and antiques. Vintage Vegas resembles a museum of funky kitsch. A stop at the Retro Bakery is sure to add to your luscious curves with their luscious cupcakes. Dress those curves at Bettie Page Clothing at either Planet Hollywood or Ceasar’s Palace. And for the fellas, schedule a pit stop at the So-Cal Speed Shop, a classic car nut’s mecca.

There you go. More than ten of the most vintage experiences Las Vegas has to offer. Kelly and Rick, the main characters in Vegas Knights, were too busy figuring out their relationship to enjoy any of them, but maybe one day they’ll find themselves standing in front of Elvis at A Little White Wedding Chapel. If they’re in a hurry, they could just roll up on Rick’s motorcycle for some ‘drive thru service’!

What about you, dear readers? What would you most like to see on a two-week vacation in Sin City? Let us know in the comments!

They sat entwined under the stars, swaying slightly with the rhythm of their own bodies. Rick’s hands moved slowly from her hair down her back. Shivers of anticipation rippled through Kelly. They were going to make love under the stars. It had always been a fantasy of hers but she’d never imagined it would come true. But a lot of things she’d never imagined were happening lately.

Feeling the need to show him she wasn’t some precious flower that needed tending and special care, that she was an independent woman, Kelly took control. His eyes never left her body as she moved to stand over him, legs spread, hands on her hips.

“Strip.” The single word brought a knowing smirk to Rick’s face. Without a word, and still never taking his eyes from her, he eased his off his jacket, throwing it aside. His gaze was positively smoldering as he loosened his tie and started to pull it over his head.

“Leave it.” Kelly commanded on impulse. His hands paused, then dropped to the front of his charcoal Armani button-down, his eyes burning into her flesh like a brand. His fingers worked slowly, deliberately, intensifying her need for him. But she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing her impatience. Cocking her hip, she let him tease her with his leisurely pace.

When the shirt was lying atop the leather jacket, he looked up expectantly, awaiting her next instruction. When she nodded toward his pants, triumph flashed across his face. She realized her mistake as he moved to stand. Once on his feet, he would tower over her, emphasizing her vulnerability and his dominance.

“On second thought, scratch that.” One of his eyebrows shot up, and a look of exasperation took the place of triumph. She knew the score and she wasn’t going to give him an advantage if she could help it. He leaned back on his elbows — shirtless and irresistible — and studied her.

She couldn’t afford to make a misstep or show any hesitation. This had become less of a game for her and more of a demand for equality in this relationship. He may be rich, but that didn’t mean he was in control here. Either he accepted that they were in this together, as equal partners, or he would be taught that lesson. Of course, she suspected that would be a lesson he might enjoy learning.
