Dark Stories

I have been a writer for five years. I write in several genres– historical,  paranormal, contemporary. I write different heat levels. Yet despite the genre,  I always seem to have people commenting that my stories are very dark. Heroines with issues, that’s me.

In Seduced by the Gladiator, both Lilia, the heroine, and Christus, the hero,  have tortured pasts. I didn’t set out to do this. I knew that I wanted my second gladiator story to feature a female warrior, since these women did actually exist. When I sat down and thought about what her life would actually have been like, living in a ludus, fighting to stay alive, I knew that my heroine would have to be extremely fierce, or she’d perish. What kind of man would she allow into her heart? To me it seemed that the best man to win her heart would be one who truly understood. Christus had made an appearance in My Wicked Gladiators, and he spoke up and told me that he wanted a chance at Lilia’s heart.

When you have two main characters with a history of abuse, there’s a lot of… well, stuff to wade through. This book was hard to write. That said, it was also fascinating. There was so much depth in these two characters that every time I peeled back a layer, there was something else. For me, this is the best kind of book to write, where I can really dig in and get my hands dirty. My biggest hope is that, as readers, you can take this journey with Christus and Lilia, and discover along with them that their pasts
make their reward all the sweeter. I know this is my favorite kind of book to read.

What about you? What do you, the reader like about books with dark plots?

Only her heart is impenetrable. After Christus, a warrior with the body of a god, is sold to the ludus that owns Lilia, she finds herself forced to defend her position and to guard her body and heart against the erotic sensations only he can bring. Beneath the tantalizing flesh of the gladiator, Lilia finds a man determined to protect her, to love her.

But when Gaius reveals a challenge for the gladiators of Rome—an epic battle to the death—Christus and Lilia must fight to win their freedom, their lives . . . and each other.

  1. I love many kinds of romance. I do enjoy a darker plot. I don’t necessarily have specific criteria when looking for a good romance. The story and the characters are what draw me into a book. Even if the plot is dark and may have a lot of topics that are squeamish to other readers. If it’s a good story, I’m all over it. The cover reminds me of the Spartacus TV series on STARZ! Lots of hunky gladiators there! Thanks for the chance to win a copy!

  2. I LOVE Gladiators. I am so excited to see a series about them! It’s different and AWESOME! I am so glad you posted this, Kat. And very nice to meet you Lauren! I had to get them both! 😉

    SO *excited* to read!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I like dark romances. I don’t know what I look for, I just know I tend to prefer dark and serious elements over things too fluffy. I decided not to psychoanalyze myself when I started reading a non-consent “romance” and enjoyed it immensely. I came to the conclusion that there are a lot of women out there that enjoy darker stories otherwise they wouldn’t be popular therefore there is nothing wrong with me! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it 🙂
Thanks for the post introducing me to this author 🙂

  4. Well, I’m going to sound like a complete nut but here goes – yes I do read romance books with darker themes but I don’t consciously seek them out – they just seem to find me or get recommended to me by others or I get attracted to the cover….I don’t really know how it happens…lol. Thanks for the giveaway
