I have a crazy mad crush on these two authors and when they announced their new series together I was over the moon.
Cari Quinn and Taryn Elliott are my darling dears. I LOVED their take on the rock star romance story that they introduced with Seduced... it’s gritty, rough, smexy and full of pain and hope too… plus well, the rock stars! 😉
Listen in on our silly chat about collecting boys, music, chimpanzees and Lost In Oblivion… enjoy the wild ride. Don’t forget to enter for a chance to win Seduced.
The Queen of Tarts
Me: Oh my goodness! Oh. My Goodness! My girls are back! *Kermit flail* Cari and Taryn are in Tartlandia! <g> You two know you make me happy right? Come on in and get cozy. We NEED to catch up. *catches breath* ummm cupcakes or cookies or candy or something else totally delicious and sweet?
Cari: YAY, I’m so thrilled to be hanging out with you again, Ms. Kat! Taryn and I are just tickled…hmm, purple to be here. (Gotta avoid the cliché catcher in our midst – *stares hard at Taryn*) As for a snack, hmm, I’m thinking brownies. With extra chocolate chips. And maybe a little chocolate frosting…
Taryn: Did you say brownies AND chocolate chips? *wipes drool* Ahem. HIHIHI!!! It’s been too long, Miss KitKat! Aww…lookie, my girl is so well trained not to use clichés now. I’m so freaking proud!
Me: *sets snacks on coffee table and scootches in between the girls on the couch* Hi! I might just stay snuggled with ya’ll forever. This is nice. But… I want more Lost In Oblivion! Soooo I guess I’ll let you leave… eventually.
Cari: LOL, snuggling is always good. Especially when there are some delicious rockstars to discuss…or budding rockstars in this case. 😉 Though by the end of Seduced they’re fully budded and about to fall off the tree, heh.
Man, I think Simon would have something to say about budding. Probably something dirty and not suitable for a PG audience. Or are we R-rated just because Cari and I are in the house? Heh.
*Scrunches down into your totally comfy couch and slurps Caramel Machiato*
How are you girls doing this summer? Melting? It’s so hot! *fans self* and not in a good way… Are you looking forward to any summer movies (I was waiting for Despicable Me! I adore those minions) or maybe doing a little vacay now that Seduced is here?
Cari: I know! It’s been a humidity fest all summer, broken up with occasional bouts of cold and rain. Like right now. Since I’d rather have cool than hot anyday – I can make my own heat, thank you very much – I definitely don’t mind. As for movies, my biggest anticipation this summer was the latest Fast and Furious movie. OMG, hot cars, hotter men, action, lust…how can you go wrong? Taryn and I still haven’t managed to see it yet but I hear it comes out on DVD in Oct.
Taryn: *eyes Cari* We can’t get our schedules together to see things together. Even our Vin Diesel/Paul Walker obsession got swallowed by deadlines this year. *whines*
As for this ungodly heat? Me and my wild hair don’t want to talk about it. HOLY CRAP!!
And did you say break? Uh…no. There’s no break in this crazy world of Oblivion. I’m already diving into Rocked. And I’m hellishly behind. I choose to blame the heat and my day job. *nods* That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.
Me: *smooths Taryn’s hair* there there hon… your hair is pretty. And well… no rest for the wicked huh? I’m all for it because I want more Oblivion! 😀
I know you two are friends (which makes me giddy that two authors I adore are friends in real life too!) How did this rockin’ project happen? Were you to watching youtube videos or what?
Cari: LOL, we’ve watched youtube vids together a few times actually, but I can’t say what exactly made us decide on this project. We’ve wanted to collaborate for a while now but we originally planned to write a series around a bakery in Salem, Mass. (We’re still going to write that series one of these days.) Somehow the boys – and girl – of Oblivion sprung out of one of our Friday night crit chats. I actually had planned to write about Gray and Jazz in another story before we came up with the band. They fit in perfectly with what we wanted to do with Oblivion. These tenacious boys just refused to let us go. 😉 Not that we fought very hard. They’re pretty yummy!
Taryn: Oh the things that happen during our crit chats. We get ourselves into the most trouble when we start running off at the mouth. Or keyboard…heck, usually both. We find ourselves on the phone even more than IM these days. We also started putting a playlist together on our favorite tool—Spotify. As the playlist grew, so did the ideas. We find a lot of our inspiration through music.
Me: *tries to take notes sneakily* How does the co-writing thingie work? I have no plans of eavesdropping on your brainstorm session for the boys and Jazz. *blinks innocently*
Cari: You wear innocence so well, Kat! 😉 I imagine all cowriters approach things differently, but Taryn and I know each other so well that luckily we didn’t have to do as much preplanning as some writers might. We figured out which of us would write which character and then kind of went from there. While we’ve both had input on everything – even the characters that are “ours” are up for discussion and approval from the other – we also give each other room to work. Our writing habits are pretty similar and we’ve been known to read each other’s minds, so that definitely helps! Oh, and Pinterest boards reaaaaally help with inspiration. It’s for work. I swearz.
Me: Ya’lls Pinterest boards are addicting.
Taryn: And we’re not even kidding when we say we read each other’s minds. Weird and freaky things happen via email, phone call, and even Twitter sometimes. In fact, one of our big plot twists for the overall story arc happened because of our freaky Wonder Twin powers.
We also have a yin and yang thing going on too. I’m awesome at detail and Cari is comes up with awesome angsty twists. And where I can play description girl—Cari is really good at continuity checks and word playing. Oh and she’s a grammar princess too. 😉
Me: I LUVS it! You two work so well together… I might have to borrow Cari’s Grammar Princess crown if the power transfers too. 😛
*swipes frosting of a chocolate cupcake* One of you… or both or you are a bit evil. E. V. I. L.! I just finished Seduced and that is wicked and yummy and gutwrenching. Gahhhh! I need more. I love the guys… my guys… Nick. *swoon* Simon. *pants* Deacon *thud* Gray *mmmm* and Jazz is a girl I wanna shop with and hang with 😀 I started reading Seduced thinking “Oh, prequel. This will be a quick tease” *wails* Nooooo it’s long drawn out foreplay! See? Evil!
Cari: Heh, we’ve actually heard the foreplay comment before. We’re just sooo excited you liked our guys! They go through a lot in this book, and yes, they might not accept all the changes stoically at all times *wink* but they’re all growing. Even by the end of Seduced, the characters are all subtly – or not so subtly – affected by what they’re dealing with. They’ll grow more in their own books. Oblivion’s journey isn’t for everyone, but we’re thrilled readers seem to be enjoying the band as much as we do. Except when we want to kick the guys’ butts for being too stubborn to do what we want on the page! But they’re cute butts. 😉
Me: *nods* VERY Cute….
Taryn: Yes but foreplay is good—especially if you draw it out just right. And we really do know that our book isn’t for everyone. And we lamented about that for a while, but in the end we needed to stay true to Simon, Deacon, Nick, Jazz and Gray. They don’t have pretty lives, they aren’t happy go lucky young adults, they all come from rough backgrounds and they’re all hungry to belong and to grab that fame monster and hold on with both hands. No matter how many times the world tries to shake them off.
Me: They are rough… but I adored them and I loved the author note that reassures us that the each band member gets their own book and that you know cliffhangers make people stabby… Lol Good word that… Stabby… I’m not too too stabby after Seduced… but I am withholding snacks till you give me sumpin to make the wait till Deacon’s story in September less painful. 😛
*looks between the girls* you could whisper it. 😀
Cari: We’re all about giving out treats. How about this – I have it on very good authority that Deacon and Harper’s book is going to be MUY SEXY? Not that I’ve read much of it yet myself. That cowriter of mine likes to hold back the goods til we’re writhing with anticipation. 😉
Me: *glares at Taryn* withholding the goods are you? Naughty! lol
Taryn: Who me? I would neeeeeever tease people like that. *slides out of the line of fire*
Let’s just say the seduction starts with food and their first time may or may not be in the center of wild summer storm where the humidity matches the hunger between them. Harper is a free spirit and Deacon is looking for someone to belong to, for someone to love him unconditionally. He’s got a heart as huge as his splendidly muscled shoulders. 😉 Oh, and did I mention he’s insatiable? And not just for her masterpieces in the catering truck.
Me: Gahhhh. Summer storm? I just saw some rain pics on you girls’ Pinterest board and Deacon and Harper character inspiration… I NEED this story.
Oh! Oh! I know you girls take writing trips together. Do you collect anything silly? Shot glasses, postcards, scarves, books, boys?
Cari: LOL, collecting boys sounds awesome, now that you mention it. Yes, we do take writing trips. One of these years we’re going to get to the coast of Maine and to visit La Nora’s Turn The Page bookstore in Maryland. Until then, we take a trip to Salem, Mass every fall. I completely love the Halloween-all-year feel of the place. Last year we stayed in nearby Marblehead and will again this year, because it’s gorgeous! As for collecting stuff…oh man, don’t get me started. I have a thing for souvenirs. Postcards especially – I have a CRAZY postcard collection, mostly from kind coworkers who always brought me something back from their trips. Along with my sparkly postcard haul, last year’s favorite Salem find was a T-shirt with the words BITE ME on it and a bat. Because I kind of like bats. No, it’s not weird. Really.
Me: *passes Cari another cupcake* Nope darlin’ not weird, wonderful!
Taryn: I can attest to the bats and Halloween thing. For birthdays and Christmas, I get Cari Halloween stuff. Especially trinkety stuff for her shelf. 😉
And one more oddity to add to the Cari/Taryn pool? I used to collect postcards too. I have sooo many from Ireland. Always had plans to frame them, but it always seems to fall down the to-do list. Writing pretty much always wins!
Maine is definitely on the list of to-do next year. We’re already booked to go back to MarbleHead in September. We always have a blast when we go. I have to go get my annual tarot card reading too!
Me: awwww Make sure you rest up and write… fast! 😀
Cari… You are a Spike fan right? *daydreams* I loved James Marsters as Spike… and he sings too… is there a bit of him in the Lost In Oblivion series?
Cari: Oh YES, I sure am a Spike fan. I tend to only watch the Spike parts of Buffy, because seriously, he’s yum times six. As for him being in the Lost in Oblivion series…not yet. But Nick definitely straddles the lines of bad and good like Spike did, though Nick doesn’t bite people and drain them of blood. At least not that I know of. Though the after parties of some of those concerts CAN get pretty wild… LOL
Me: hmmmm Nick 😉
Taryn, you and I share custody of Dean Winchester. *nods* we SHARE! 😀 Tell me who in Oblivion is the most Dean-like? Is it Deacon (the name!) or maybe Nick with the wounded wanting what he can’t have or or… hmmm I am projecting Dean onto all the guys. 😛
Taryn: Deacon definitely has that super-sexy low voice that Dean has. And oddly enough…Jensen Ackles does make an appearance in Lost in Oblivion’s ROCKED. The headlining band, Rebel Rage, has a hot guitarist named Logan that maybe…just possibly…be inspired by a certain gruff and slightly wounded Dean Winchester. And Rebel Rage might just have a story to tell in the future…
Me: *squee!* oh oh oh! Yay!
Have either of you been in a band or are musically inclined? Yep. I even wanna know about car singing.
Cari: Music’s always been a huge part of my life. I wanted to be a singer since childhood, until I got to high school and turned to writing once I realized I wasn’t cut out for that lifestyle. The writing lifestyle, which involves lots of typing in pajamas while chug-a-lugging coffee, is much more my speed. I’ve never been in a band but I tried to start a couple in junior high. They always fizzled. I also took piano lessons and was told I have a great ear for music, but I lacked one important component – patience. (I hear Taryn laughing now!)
Me: Typing in pajamas! and now that song Bananas in Pajamas is stuck in my head. lol
Taryn: LOL We both lack the patience thing. And I have a deep and abiding love for music. All kinds—but I have NO ear for it. Tone deaf is probably a pretty fair assessment to be honest. I was actually an artist in high school and college, but writing was always there waiting in the wings. I think the art thing actually helped me add extra detail to my prose. I’m hugely visual—hello Pinterest and Tumblr obsession anyone?
Me:I am very thankful for your artistic vision and well… your Pinterest and Tumblr!
Speaking of car singing… cause I was. *nods* I sing all the time in the car. What do you listen to and what have you been singing along to this summer?
Cari: I listen to eeeeverything. My playlists are crazy eclectic, from country to rap and everything between. I think my biggest find this summer was Imagine Dragons. I really fell in love with them. And I always love The Killers. But my favorite song this summer is “Blurred Lines”. Hilarious and sexy is always my go-to combination in music and in books. 😉
Me:*fist bumps Cari* Yes! Hilarious + Sexy. My fav Combo too. Humor, Heart, Heat and you girls bring that… plus the angsty-ness. Gahhh
I had to go youtube (yes! that’s a verb 😛 ) Imagine Dragons. I have heard a few of their songs I just didn’t know their name. Sooo… You girls are responsible for my getting sucked into their youtube channel. 😀 Love them!
Taryn: Music is my crack too. “Blurred Lines” is eeeevil! That’s one of those songs that plants itself in your head and you can’t get it out. I listened to a lot of Imagine Dragons and Fallout Boy while we were writing Seduced.
Now, with ROCKED…I’m binging on Alter Bridge, Myles Kennedy with Slash, and Shinedown. And then personally—Matt Nathanson is my crack. I love that man!
Here’s my ROCKED playlist. 😉
Me: That question was just a warm up for my silly… everything before *waves grandly* was very serious. Very!
How could you compare your tandem writing process to patting your head and rubbing your belly… or maybe it’s rubbing your head and patting your belly?
Cari: It’s actually kind of similar, LOL. Since we don’t do a lot of preplanning and like to see where the characters take us within the loose framework we’ve built for them, sometimes there are surprises. And we juggle a lot. If it’s hard to figure out what’s going on in your own brain, add in another for a barrel of fun! But we’ve made it work and it’s been surprisingly easy. It really helps when you’re working with someone you like and respect so much. And can randomly insult, just for kicks. 😉
Taryn: *gives side eye* If you only knew how many insults I had to field! Okay, okay…so I usually start it. Whatever. But she’s right. I wouldn’t do this with just anyone. I trust her implicitly. And even better—she pushes me to be better. There’s no complacency when you’re writing with Miss Cari Quinn I’ll tell ya that much! But you know that thing about doing 2 things at once? And not always successfully? I know that if I make a mistake, she’ll find it and vice versa.
We both have a lot of pride in our work, so we wouldn’t do anything make our cowriter look less than awesome….if we can help it. LOL
Me: Nice! And it definitely works. 😉
I just made up a word eurockphyte please make up the definition and use the word in a sentence. *giggles*
Cari: Heheheh. Eurockphyte—a newbie to European trash rock (whatever that is, I can make stuff up too!)
Sentence: You know that lame dude wearing no pants is a total eurockphyte, right?
Taryn: An initiate to the school of British rock –
Sentence: What do you mean you’ve never heard of Bowie? Are you a eurockphyte or something?
Me: bwahahahaha *chokes on frappaccino* ha
Take turns with a round robin quickie story thingamagig
(Not a round with Robin Thicke unfortunately 😉 )
starting with… By the sea
(sorry! I was visiting Maine and that song was in my head)
Me: *blinks dazedly*I. I. I LOVE this! Very Alice in Wonderland-y. Cursed Octopus! *beams*
I loves you two to the muchness! Write fast, rock hard and come back sooner! Tartlandia has been a quieter place without you.
Cari: Kat, we seriously, seriously, SERIOUSLY could not wait to hang out with you on your couch and answer your awesomely fun questions! We always have the best time with you! The brownies barely even matter. Absolutely not. *brushes off crumbs* Thanks SO much for having us and we can’t wait to come back and visit again soon! HUGS!
Taryn: I can’t say it any better. *uses fingertip to press into table for all the crumbs* We love bouncing around on your couch. Your interviews are always fun and a bit zany. Just like us.
You know I’ll be back to talk all about Deacon and Harper and their meltingly hot summer together. 😉
PS. I adored Seduced so much I’m giving away 2 kindle copies! contest at the bottom. *waves grandly* Go Forth And Enter!
