When I realized I was visiting Kat today I knew what we had to talk about.
Yes, I’m going to talk about clothes! You see, Kat and I both have a thing for retro style dresses. Thank you PinUpGirlClothing.com for making my wallet hurt. It’s probably why I also spent a lot of time picking out the cast of Under His Skin’s wardrobe from a smattering of similar websites.
When I sat down to write Pandora’s story I knew the cast would be very much like that of the show LA Ink, four women who are different, have their own flair and yet mesh on a level that’s akin to family. They each had to be unique, with certain things that no one else in the shop would wear.
Pandora is the main female character in the first book, and I believe I describe her as a “modern Rosie the Riveter,” type. You might not know who Rosie the Riveter is, but you’ve seen her face. She’s the iconic WWII woman who stepped into the shoes vacated by so many men, and is often associated with modern day feminism. She’s a tough cookie, and that style of strength and femininity was what I wanted to convey with Pandora. Here is a woman that is both strong, and soft. Sure she can dress it up or go for total comfort, but at her core? She’s a Rosie.
Kellie is the exotic co-show owner. If the cast were doubling as the Spice Girls, Kellie would be Sporty Spice. She might be a nearly five foot ten Asian chick, but she’s a no-nonsense jeans and t-shirt girl. I had a little fun digging into Asian inspired clothing, specifically custom made and small boutique type dresses and separates. If you can, poke around in your local communities to see what small businesses are around and making some really awesome clothing.
Autumn is the trouble maker, and the one character I kinda sorta based on someone else. If you’ve seen LA Ink, you’ve seen Pixie. Yes, that is her real name. Imagine Autumn, and her style, like Pixie’s, but amped to ten. When you think tattoo culture, often times people picture someone with dyed hair, crazy piercings and a ton of tattoos. Autumn is all of that. I believe that in the first book alone, Autumn has three hair colors. Her style is crazy, super sexy.
I might have had the most fun with Mary’s wardrobe. I saved her for last because I think Kat will kind of love her the most. It’s okay with me, I’m a little biased all the time. Mary is my super sexy, retro Latina, who might as well be a fashion plate for all the vintage stores out there. Full skirts, sweetheart necklines, wiggle dresses and crinoline, she has a very specific style that she’s known for.
As a writer, it’s important to conceptualize each character as an individual so they don’t bleed together. As a girl who always wanted to play with paper dress up dolls? I love playing mental dress up with my characters. It’s like being given the liberty to go on a virtual shopping trip!
If you could remake your wardrobe in one style, what would it be?
PS. Sidney is offering one commentor a print or digital copy of Under His Skin! *squee!* Just leave a comment answering her question about a dream wardrobe change… Oh! Open till the 29th 🙂

A huge (((hug))) for Sidney! I ♥ her. She’s funny, snarky, sweet and spicy plus she loves Dr. Pepper, retro things and burlesque! If I lived in Texas I would stalk her. Don’t run Sidney… I was kidding… kinda :p I’d totally make her go shopping with me.
I am so thrilled to be part of Bewitching Tours Blog Hop for Sidney’s newest book. I don’t want you to miss out on Under His Skin! It’s available in ebook now and in print on November 12th. And she is so right, I really, really want Mary’s story. :p

A woman who doesn’t believe she deserves love… Toe-curling kisses and enough sex to fill a weekend were all Pandora wanted from a fling with her teenage crush. She’s never forgotten how he played the knight in shining armor to her damsel in distress. She’s ready to say thank you in several naughty ways, so long as she can walk away when it’s over with her heart intact.
A man moving on from tragedy… Brian has no intention of allowing the feisty tattoo artist to leave him after one taste. He hasn’t had enough of her inked curves. The packaging might have changed, but Pandy is the woman he hasn’t been able to excise from his memory. He’s ready to put together a new life, one that includes her. But he’s not the only one vying for her attention. Someone else wants her, dead or alive.
