My black and white movie costume
Black and White Costume
I LOVE black and white movies. We grew up watching some of my dad’s fav shows on video. Do you remember movie rental stores and VHS? 😀 Well, we’d go to the movie store and pick up Francis the Talking Mule, The Roy Rogers Show, Abbot and Costello and the Bing Crosby and Bob Hope Road To… movies. Then I got into Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Hitchcock and old musicals. My house has framed reproduction classic movie posters like Gigi, Charade, The Desk Set and Notorious. So, when we went to Dragon Con a few years ago we did one of my favorite costumes ever. We went as Black and White movie characters 🙂
- Black/white/gray hair or wig
- Black/white/gray retro style dress/suit and gloves are a nice touch
- and then makeup!
ok, I’ve since found better stuff and I’ll tell you what I recommend now… But for these photos we put on a gray body paint from Mehron. It was rather a pain! We had sponges and put it on all exposed skin and stood with our arms out while we dried. If you look closely you can see it started to crack in the creases in the bend of the elbows etc. *sigh* But it worked ok. Then of course there was gray lipstick and gray eyeshadow that we used in place of blush and to add shadows, collarbones, jawline… where ever we needed depth. My brother was a good sport and dressed up with my sisters and me. I absolutely loved this photo shoot in the Atlanta, GA Oakland Cemetery… If I did it again I would use the body paint I’ve since used for zombie costumes. I highly recommend Kryolan aquacolor makeup. It went on easy with a wet sponge and stayed put until we washed it off with soap and water. We didn’t have any problems with it smudging off on peoples clothes or cracking in bendy parts lol I ordered mine from Frends Beauty Supply Sooo, Tv white aquacolor for pale zombie skin (I’ll show you more tomorrow) and light gray for a black and white movie escapee. 😛
Have you ever read Carol Nelson Douglas’ Delilah Street urban fantasy books? They are intriguing, but what really got me was the CinSims (Cinema Simulacrums), dead celebrities recreated via science and magic; there are black and white movie stars serving drinks in the casinos in Vegas! I felt like a CinSim in my costume. 🙂
DON’T forget to enter my
