I am ecstatic to have Lanie Jordan visit The Book Tart… I might not ever let her leave *practices my evil laughter* *cough! cough* She is sweet and snarky and very helpful and nice and she’s up super late and answers my questions in the middle of the night AND she’s writes brilliantly! I LOVE her young adult novel Breed of Innocence. I had bought it before I even really knew who she was, I just liked the synopsis. I’m so glad I did. It has creative, fascinating world building and a relatable heroine. I want more. Yesterday! I will post my review tomorrow
Sooo, settle it. Grab some snacks and listen in on our visit….
Me: Lanie? Lanie! You’re here *grabs Lanie and pulls her to the virtual couch* Oh! Oh! I’m so excited you made it *squee!* And I’m scaring you, don’t panic! *deep breath* ok, ok…. ummm can I get you anything? Coffee, Tea, soda? Something with an umbrella in it?
Lanie: Actually, I just recently quit drinking soda! (Well, all but one a day, but one doesn’t count, does it? Nah.) But I’ll totally take something with an umbrella. Can I make umbrella-color requests? If so, I’m a blue gal. 😀
Me: *passes Lanie a soda WITH a blue umbrella* we live to please
Now we met when I saw on twitter that you were writing your first guest blog (which rocked! And I told you so) And then I read the synopsis of Breed of Innocence and I was intrigued and immediately went and bought it on Amazon I do adore twitter and meet the bestest people… And find the bestest books!
Lanie: Definitely. (And thanks for the support on my minor freak-out over said guest blog, lol.)
I LOVE Twitter. It’s awesome for meeting people and learning about great books. And it’s a great procrastination tool! Er, wait. I probably shouldn’t have admitted that…
Me: *snort* I NEVER use it to avoid a task *adjust imaginary halo* And if you believe that I have a little beach front house to sell you… in Colorado 😛
I’m so glad you introduced us to Jade (love!) and the CGE and Linc *sigh* I love your world building and your take on the supernatural. Sooo, Can you tell me a bit about writing The Breed Chronicles? I know the ideas been in your head for a few years.
Lanie: Blood shed, tears, cramping fingers, double-vis—oh, you probably didn’t mean that stuff, did you? My bad. Well, writing The Breed Chronicles has been…crazy and full of ups and downs, twists and turns. I wrote it originally as an adult novel, but then realized it needed to be a Young Adult story. I think it’s so much better this way!
And yes, Jade, Linc, and the CGE have all been in my head for almost 5 years. I’ve rewritten both versions of the story—YA and adult—at least a dozen or two times now. But if you asked my friends, they’d lie and say it’s had close to 100 rewrites. *grin*
Honestly, I just love the story, the characters, and the world. Even after all this time, it’s still my favorite, and I’m continuing to discover new things about the series as I write it.
Me: Please tell me you are almost done with the sequel? *bouncing on the couch* please??? And how many are you planning in the series?
Lanie: I’m a fussy writer, so everything has to be just so or it’s no good. The sequel is in full swing, though! I’m not sure exactly how long it’s going to end up being, but if it’s around the same size as the first book, then I’m about a quarter of the way in. (Me and Jade had different ideas on where to start book 2, so we argued over that for a bit (read: at least 10 different beginnings). Gotta love characters!)
As for how many I’m planning… Oh, somewhere between 6 and 10 books. The original series had only 3 books planned, but once I realized it needed to be Young Adult, it just kind of morphed and grew into this big plot that I could never finish in 3 books—not unless they were mammoth-sized.
So, er, in short, I’ve got lots planned for it. 😀
Me: *kermit flail* 6-10?! Yay! Yay! Yay!
I noticed that we have the same fictional boyfriend… Dean Winchester! I adore his character on Supernatural. Mmmm Well, honestly I’ve had a crush on Jensen Ackles since 2002 when I watched him as Alec in Dark Angel. Has he been my boyfriend for longer than he’s been yours? 😛
Lanie: Ah, yes. Dean Winchester. Now that’s an awesome character! He’s just so… perfectly flawed. Not so good that he’s too lovey-dovey, and not so bad that he’s completely unredeemable. And I saw him first, I’m sure I did. (Okay, I *might* be lying. I didn’t see Dark Angel until after it had already been cancelled. Absolutely loved Dark Angel, by the way. I’m still mad they cancelled it!) Either way, he’s still mine!
Me: Ummm nope! Mine! Ha!
Do you have any shows that have taken Eureka’s spot on Monday nights now that its over? *hands Lanie a tissue and chocolate*
Lanie: Thanks! I’m still upset by the cancellation. *sniffles* Eureka was great. (It’s definitely on my top-10 list of Awesomest shows ever. Honestly, I haven’t even watched the finale yet. If I don’t watch it, then it’s not really over…right? Right. Moving right along… *cough*)
WWE (wrestling) is on Monday nights, as is The Voice, so I’ve got stuff to watch, but I still miss Eureka!
Me: Oh! I’ve heard you kinda, sorta, like (are crazy for!) the WWE Do you have a fav wrestler or two? I am a fan of all the muscles and shiny skin
Lanie: Ah, yes, my WWE obsession! I’ve been watching on and off for about half my life, lol. My favorite wrestlers right now are John Cena and Randy Orton. John Cena is just passionate about what he does and it’s really great to see people who obviously love what they do. And Randy Orton…well, he has that Bad Boy vibe going on, and as much as I love the good guys, I love bad boys too! Google has great images of both!
Me: Oh My! I just looked at some images *points up at their names* Click there 😛 yumm!
It’s time for The Book Tart Quickie
- Last movie you watched in the theatre?: Avatar! I’m not big on theatres, so that was the last one I remember seeing. And it. was. AWE to the SOME. Just sayin’.
- What are you wearing right now? Grey shorts and a black tank. I know, you’re jealous of my fashion expertise.
- Roller coasters?: Ah! The Harry Potter one at Universal—Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, I think. (I totally want to be a witch and fly on a broomstick!)
- Junk food fav?: Potato sticks! Totally addicted to those things. They’re like food AND toys at the same time.
- Laptop or PC?: PC, though I own a netbook, an iPad, and an iPhone, so I write on all 4, depending on my needs. 😀 (I’m a total nerd and love me some technology!)
- Chocolate or vanilla?: Vanilla. I’m totally boring!
- Fictional character you’d like to meet? It’s a three-way tie between Jack Carter from Eureka (such a hilarious character!), Harry Potter, and, of course, Dean Winchester from Supernatural. Sorry! I can’t pick just one and you can’t make me!
- Ringtone on your phone? *checks* Rockstar by Nickleback, and Teardrop by Massive Attack (the theme song from House) as my text tone. I like music…sorry.
- Ebook or print? Ebook, baby! Could not live without my iPad or iPhone! Well, I could, but then I’d be sad, and no one wants Lanie sad. I hope.
- If you could create an ice cream flavor what would it be and what would you name it? Wait, I have to be a creative writer AND a creative ice cream flavor-inventor? Hmm. Okay, I’m up to the challenge. …actually, I lied. I’m boring. Can I just have vanilla ice cream, with some cherries, strawberries, and Hershey’s syrup mixed in and call it Lanielicious? Or Mine? Haha. Now I want ice cream…. *whispers “Does this interview come with snacks?”*
Me: THAT? was epic! love And yep, I’m all about the food *passes Lanie my ever present sour patch kids*
I make up word mashup Katisms to torture authors with :p cakescopy is yours *giggle* Please make up a definition and use the word in a sentence 😛
Laine: Cakescopy. Pronounced cake-ska-p. Cakescopy is the autopsy of cakes to discover the secret ingredients that make them so addictive. (It can also be applied to pies, though then it’d be a cakepiescopy. Try to say that three times fast, I dare ya!)
In use: I want a cakescopy of Cheesecake. (Even if it really looks like a pie, and maybe actually is a pie. But it has ‘cake’ in the name, so I’m using it! *sticks tongue out*)
Me: How could you compare your writing to demon hunting? And what up with Adam Levine?
Lanie: Hmm. How could I compare writing to demon hunting? You like the hard questions, don’t ya? Let’s see… They’re both, at times, completely scary and require violence (like kicking your own character’s butt for not following the rules!). And just when you think you know all there is to know, they both surprise you with something new! (Which can sometimes lead to the violence part.)
As for Adam Lavine…have you seen him? Google him! He’s gorgeous! Plus, his voice is awesome. And if you haven’t seen him on The Voice, you should. He’s adorable and funny and pouts when he doesn’t get his way, LOL. Did I mention he was adorable?
Me: Nice! on the demon hunting/writing comparison And Adam, Oh Adam… *sigh* I know you’ve been listening to his song “One More Night” for at minimum 3 days in a row! *whispers* I stalk your twitter feed 😛
Me: What is the 9 line on the 32 page of your first novel?
Lanie: Okay, this is actually from the original adult version of Breed, since it was the first novel I actually ever finished.
“Of course, if she did another challenge, she wouldn’t be able to use her tricks. He promised not to use them himself—he never said anything about not trying to catch her using them.”
Me: Would you rather be thought of as Fluffy, Playful, Feisty , Sassy, or Curious? You can only choose one and explain your answer 😛
Lanie: Feisty. It just sounds cooler. Feisty, feisty! See? Totally cooler! Plus, it’s kind of a combination of the last four you listed. (See? I can cheat and pick more than one! Bwahaha!)
Me: You are right *giggle* Feisty! me likey
You, my darling, rock! Thank you so much for putting up with me. I hope I didn’t scare you away and that you want to visit my virtual couch again… We could watch movies.
Lanie: Thanks for having me! And I don’t scare that easily! …okay, I do, but I’ll still come back and visit whenever you want me to! Your virtual couch is comfortable. 😀 And movies? Oh, what movies? Does that invitation include popcorn? Maybe I should stick around for a while…
Oh? *squee!* Grabs a stack of DVDs have you seen Jensen in 10 Inch Hero? He has completely epic hair! And those eyes… I could pop some popcorn. (not gonna let you leave! lol)
More Fiesty Lanie
Lanie Jordan writes stories. Sometimes her characters drive her crazy, but then she gets her revenge by making their lives more difficult. Fictional payback is fun.
She loves reading, writing, watching TV, and listening to the same songs for months on end. The WWE is a not-so-secret secret obsession of hers, and she vows to one day write a story about wrestlers, just so she can claim watching it is for research.
Dean Winchester from Supernatural is one of her all-time favorite characters. Her friends would probably tell you she’s obsessed with all things Dean/Supernatural; she’s not, really. She just loves them a little. Okay, so it might be a tad more than a little, but if anyone ever finds out she’ll claim it was a blatant lie and that aliens wrote her bio.
And while she’s on the subject, she does believe in aliens and ghosts and things that go bump and boo in the night. You won’t find her admitting that she’s seen any of those things, of course, cause let’s face it, who would believe her? But she writes about them. And demons and angels and weirdo people who do weirdo things.
