I am having so much fun in my own little teeny corner of the web <g> I have been introduced to some really good books that I might otherwise have missed and then I can spaz out about them here in the comfort of my own virtual living room and chat about one of my favorite things in the world. Good Books!
Karen Stivali approached me in September and told me about Holding On and it’s book birthday November 25th and asked if I would like to read it. The synopsis grabbed me and I am delighted to say I loved this story! I might not have picked it up on my own and that would have been a shame. Karen is on my radar now 😛 And I’ll be watching for what she does next.
If you enjoy contemporary romance and stories with vivid characters and relatable situations take a look at Holding On. Click HERE for my review
Oh! It’s on sale right now (as of 11/27) from Turquoise Morning Press for $2.99
Now, settle back and relax and listen in on my chat with Karen!

Me: Karen! Yay! Yay! I’m a so excited that I get to have you visit The Book Tart the week of your book birthday for Holding On 😀 Take a seat on my virtual couch and get comfy. I’m all about the snacks here and I read that you are staying sugar free and gluten free right now (wow!) and since I just came back from visiting New York, I picked up some cupcakes, to help us celebrate, from Babycakes. Their frosting is Ah-mazing! *takes a seat on the couch and grabs a cupcake from the box* Oh! Can I get you a drink too? Coffee, tea, soda, water?
Karen: Water please. I’m easy. Wait, that doesn’t sound good…
Me: *chokes on soda* lol Here’s your water
Sooo, How have you been? Has your fall been crazy busy with 2 releases back to back telling Daniel and Marienne’s story? Meant To Be in August and now Holding On this month *Kermit flail* I am so happy that you didn’t make us readers wait ages for the next chapter in Daniel and Marienne’s journey. *sigh*
Karen: I’m good, thanks! Yes, it’s been crazy busy, but I’m glad the two books have come out so close together. I know I hate to wait for sequels as a reader so I’m glad people haven’t had to wait too long between books.
Me: You and your heroine Marienne share a love of food and cooking. I love that your website has recipes for food that she makes in the book! *daydreaming* mmmm I love chocolate can’t wait to try those brownies that Daniel moaned over in Meant To Be. 😀 Have you been experimenting with recipes now that you are steering clear of gluten? I would love some ideas on yummy things to make. My mom and my friend Lisa, the Maid of Tarts, are gluten free too.
Karen: So far my gluten free/sugar free cooking has been mainly with ice creams. I’m allowed to eat maple syrup and honey (natural sugars) so I’ve gotten very good at making desserts that involve them! There’s a recipe for pumpkin maple ice cream on my blog and more will be coming soon. Enjoy the brownies when you make them—they’re swoon-worthy. Daniel’s not the only one who loves them!
When I start doing more experimenting with gluten free baking I’ll be sure to post it on my blog. I’m hoping to be allowed to go off the gluten free/sugar free Lyme disease diet within a year or so, but I have so many friends who are gluten free I’ll definitely be trying out lots of recipes.

Me: What stories can we look for next from you?
Keren: That’s a question without a simple answer. I have a short erotic story in the Felt Tips Erotic Office Supply Charity Anthology (seriously) which releases 12/12/12 and is edited by the lovely Tiffany Reisz (author of the Original Sinners series from Mira Books).
In May I will have my first release from Samhain publishishing—THEN,AGAIN is a contemporary romance. It’s a friends-to-lovers, second-chance-with-an-old-crush story and it takes place at a beach house. I’m so glad it’s releasing in May because it’ll make a perfect summer beach read!
I will have a short Daniel and Marienne story in an anthology that will release from Turquoise Morning Press in June. I also recently signed two new contracts. LEAVE THE LIGHTS ON is a contemporary romance that will release from Samhain in late 2013. JUST IN TIME will be released January 26, 2014 and it’s Justine’s story (yes, Justine from Meant To Be and Holding On). I know she’s a character most people love to hate, but she needs her own book and you’ll see why. (Sounds like a tease, but it’s not. It’s only teasing if you don’t put out, and I’ll put out eventually!) And yes, Daniel and Marienne will make guest appearances in her novel.
Me: *squee!* I really, really want to see Justine’s story! And more Daniel and Marienne. Yum!
Karen: I have three other projects in the works, but they’re super sekrit at the moment so I can’t even hint about them. I’ll be happy to update you when I can!
Me: Definitely! I’ll bug ya for news. ;P
Oh! Oh! *bounces a bit on the couch* Do you have any more novels in your head that you plan to share for Daniel and Marienne? I loved Holding On! One reason is because I enjoy seeing a couple after the “and they all lived happily ever after”. <g> I mean, really Cinderella? What happened after you moved to the castle with your prince? The story should keep going! Lol
Karen: There’s always the possibility of more Daniel and Marienne. When I finished writing Meant To Be I knew right away that I wasn’t done with them. I had no idea how not done I was. Right now they can be found in some combination in a short story in the Foreign Affairs anthology, in Meant To Be and Holding On, and they’ll be in the upcoming wedding anthology and in Just In Time. I’d never rule out another whole book for them either….
Me: Well, I’ll be looking for them <g>
Ok *hugs a throw pillow* hold on tight! 😛 it’s about to get silly…er
Is your writing influenced at all by the beverages choices of your critique partner Karen Booth?
Check out the two of them on their blog http://thekarens.com/
Karen: No, I leave the drinking to Karen B. I drink water. I’m goofy enough on my own without special enhancement!
Me: And what about The Bachelor? 😛
Karen: I thank The Bachelor for reminding me how much I love writing (blogging and posting about that show is what got me writing again after years without). Plus it’s thanks to the people I met from that show (friends from the message boards and a contestant or two) who had faith in me and encouraged me to keep writing and submitting Meant To Be that the book is now in print. Without them the book might never have been written and certainly never would have left my laptop! Watching that (admittedly silly show) changed my life in more ways than I ever would have imagined possible.
Me: I just made up a word Eyeyability (ha!) please make up a definition and use the word in a sentence.
Keren: I think it’s how easy a person is on someone’s eyes. In other words…. Daniel is handsome enough his eyeyability is off the charts—I could stare at him all day.
Me: Good One! and I sooo agree! Hugest crush on Daniel…. *sigh*
What is the first sentence on page 49 of your first novel?
Karen: “You guys up for dinner and pool on Friday?” (It’s from Meant To Be)
Me: Summarize your newest book, Holding On, twitter style in 140 characters or less. Go!
Karen: When you have everything you’ve ever dreamed of, the hard part is holding on.
Me: only 77 characters! plenty of room to add a link to the book. <g> Good job!
I’ve put together a plethora of words beginning with P. Would you rather be thought of as Polite, Prudent, Plucky, Persistent, Precocious, Pretty, or Pragmatic? You can only pick one and explain your answer pretty please 😯
Karen: Several of those fit me but I’m probably most persistent. I don’t give up easily, which comes in handy in the publishing business. And in other aspects of life. Some call it stubbornness but I prefer to frame it more positively. (See how many “p” words I used in my answer? Proud of me?)
Me: I’m pickled tink! I mean tickled Pink 😉
It’s time for The Book Tart Quickie
- Last movie you watched in the theatre?: Dark Shadows (love any reason to look at Johnny Depp)
- What are you wearing right now? Fleece PJ pants, a camisole and my NaNoWriMo hoodie (God, I dress like a writer)
- Ring tone on your phone?: I Wanna Be Sedated by The Ramones
- Dream vacation destination?: Florence, Italy (haven’t been in years but it’s my favorite city)
- Karaoke?: Love to watch but don’t sing
- Phobia?: Spiders (don’t even like typing the word—eeek!)
- Fictional character you’d like to meet? There are way too many. I’d love for a lot of fictional characters to spring to life. Can you arrange that?
- Favorite superhero? Superman (gotta love a handsome guy in glasses)
- Ebook or print? Love the feel of paper and the convenience of ebooks—both, please
- Favorite music album…right now I’m not good at favorites—my taste varies too much by mood. I actually have a favorite radio station I listen to because they play all sorts of music that I like (everything from oldies to classic 80s to current indie stuff) and that way I don’t have to choose! Shout out to 92.5 The River in Boston!
Me: Awww 😉 That was fun! Thank you so much Karen for chatting with me here at The Book Tart and celebrating your book birthday! Come back anytime, my couch is plush and the snacks are plentiful. (lol I can’t seem to stop thinking of P letter words now that I started <g>)
Karen: 😀 Thanks again for having me on your blog! xoxo
